The History of 420 & How to Celebrate

04/20/2024

4/20 is well-known as a code name for cannabis, even among individuals who have never tried a product or considered its benefits, but few consumers are aware of the story behind this term and how it gained traction. Here are some of the most important things to know about what 4/20 is, where it came from, and how products from The Cannabis Depot can be the perfect starting point for your 4/20 celebrations!

The Legend of the Waldos

While most cannabis consumers know that 4/20 typically refers to April 20 in modern culture, it is believed to have originally been used to identify 4:20 pm. This time was used as a code among students at California's San Rafael High School who met to smoke marijuana at 4:20 pm after school. These students became referred to as "Waldos" because they met against a wall, and they used the code to secretly invite one another to meet or otherwise discuss cannabis consumption without their parents or teachers picking up on what they were referring to.

This use of the term originated sometime in the 1970s, during a time when cannabis consumption was illegal in significantly more of the country than it is today, and consumption was considered more countercultural than it is by today's standards. One of the original users of this term went on to work for Grateful Dead, which played a key role in spreading the message.

How 4/20 Made It Into the Mainstream

While this early use of the number was originally contained within a single high school, it quickly spread to other high schools, colleges, and beyond to subtly describe cannabis consumption as it began to become legal in more states and more accepted by mainstream society. Once 420 became a widespread nickname for cannabis consumption, the number was converted into a date to be used as a holiday that celebrates the benefits of cannabis and advocates for its legalization. This holiday was originally intended to work toward reducing the stigma associated with cannabis consumption, particularly when it was much less mainstream and consumed by a much smaller percentage of individuals.

How You Can Celebrate 4/20

4/20 is frequently celebrated with rallies and other events that promote the benefits of cannabis and promote local legalization efforts. Many of these events are sponsored by or otherwise attended by key players in the cannabis industry, such as manufacturers, sellers, and advocates who are working to legalize its consumption at the local level.
